If you have been arrested for a first offense DUI and you have never been in trouble before with the law then you probably have no idea what to do next. One of the most important things you can do besides getting in contact with a DUI lawyer is start and complete the ADIS class.
The ADIS class or alcohol drug information school is typically the only level of treatment recommended following an alcohol and drug evaluation for a first offense DUI. It’s important to keep in mind the evaluation cannot be completed without the police report so you most likely cannot do that immediately following a DUI arrest since you wont have it. But the ADIS class can be completed without the evaluation and you can register for it whenever your schedule is free. So why is it important for you to get this done immediately following a DUI arrest.
First you will be required to do this anyway. So why not get it done ahead of time. It will be one less thing for you to worry about. Believe it or not by getting this done ahead of time you will feel less stress about the incident and hopefully start to feel better about the criminal case.
Secondly when it comes time for your DUI lawyer to negotiate with the Prosecutor by doing the ADIS well before the Judge imposed it will show the Prosecutor that you’re not only taking this seriously but you’re being proactive about it. Most defendants in a criminal case drag their feet when it comes to court imposed conditions. Paying the fine, doing community service hours, etc. By showing the Prosecutor that you’re not one of those people will only help you in the long run.
Lastly, it will help you when it comes time to get your alcohol and drug evaluation done. The counselor will most likely be impressed that you did the ADIS class before the evaluation. It will show them that you recognize this incident was a mistake and you’re trying to rectify it as best as possible. In the end they will be more likely to only recommend the one day class as treatment if you have already completed it.
In conclusion if you have been arrested for a DUI then it is in your best interests to complete the ADIS class as soon as possible. It is an all day class, usually on Saturdays, but it will help you immensely in your criminal case.
